Can someone please clarify?

by Loraine Niven

I was informed today that the new houses being erected at the gameshall are in fact not council houses for the local people, but supposedly for moving in Alchoholics and Junkies from the outlying cities??? I seriously hope this is not so!! Why are Junkies and alchoholics from outside this village being moved here??? Is it not hard enough to keep our young people on the straight and narrow in this age of unemployment and credit crunch?

I cannot beleive that this is the future plans for our village...why on earth should Catrine put up with this ridiculous state of affairs, why would parents wish Junkies living near the nursery school, do we want this kind of person influencing our children?  I moved back here after living in Kilmarnock for 10 years where Junkies hanging around seems the normal thing these days, stealing off old people, littering the streets with their skeletal forms...... what input do they give our village NONE, I think if this is true then its absolutely outragious.. can somebody tell me how and where we can find out what is the intention of these buildings

Kind regards

Loraine

Site moderator: East Ayrshire Council's head of Housing Chris McAleavey has responded to the rumours - saying: “Atrium Homes are currently on site in Catrine and, through their contractor, are building 16 homes for the affordable housing rental market.

“The site will comprise of a mixture of homes and flats. The ground and first floor units have been designed specifically for older people. The design of these homes has been informed by officers from Social Work and will include wet floor shower rooms to meet the needs of our older tenants.

“As with normal practise the Council has 50% nomination rights to the new housing once completed. The properties will be let by Atrium Homes in accordance with the new Housing Allocation Policy which all local social landlords have signed up to and which has been designed specifically to meet local housing needs.

“There is absolutely no truth in the claims that we are actively canvassing ‘junkies and alcoholics from the outlying cities’ to be placed within these properties. This is a wild allegation which has absolutely no basis in fact.”

Thank you for your prompt reply, and although no-one is "actively" canvassing these types of tennants to be moved in this is becoming an ever increasing problem in our area.

There are a lot of local people bearing the brunt of certain tennants that have been moved in to our village and I feel that some sort of safegaurd must be met to disallow Catrine to be the dumping ground for problem tennants.  Wether actively seeking or not I'm sure the village do not wish anymore troublesome tennants moved into our village.

It would be better to encourage our young adults to remain in Catrine and give them the opportunity to receive the benefits that seem only to be given to those that do not contribute to our society.

Absolutely agree Loraine, find places for 'problems' somewhere else we have enough of our own to try to sort here without getting them from elsewhere. I also support your call for absentee landlords to be brought to book over derelict properties on St Germain street. There are many folk in the village who could make good use of these properties if they were made available.
